HUD ‘Musts’ for Taking Applications and Wait List Management to Ensure Compliance

Even though the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allows owners and agents to create their own systems for taking applications and putting applicants on a waiting list for public housing, their procedures are still reviewed during a HUD management and occupancy review. It’s crucial, therefore, to know the “musts” according to the agency’s Occupancy Requirements of Subsidized Multifamily Housing Programs guide. In order to ensure you are in compliance by treating each applicant consistently and avoiding discrimination, you need to have specific procedures in place that you use every time an applicant walks in the door.

In this session by expert speaker Debbie Hixon, you’ll learn important steps you should take to ensure HUD compliance in taking applications and managing waiting lists. Debbie will review some of the strict guidelines for wait list management and explain the HUD handbook’s approach to this tricky subject. Plus, you’ll get a copy of the relevant portion of Chapter 4 of the handbook that pertains to waiting lists.

Session Highlights

  • The information that must appear on every application
  • How to match applicants on your waiting list to available units
  • How to close a waiting list
  • The steps you must take when re-opening a waiting list
  • What to do when a disabled family member is at the top of the list but there are no units available to accommodate that him or her
  • Step-by-step review of Chapter 4 of the HUD Handbook 4350.3 Rev-1 pertaining to waiting lists

Who Should Attend
