Understand the HUD's Provisions and Guidelines for Fair Housing for Tenants Protected by VAWA.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) contains provisions for public housing and includes housing protection. Evictions and terminations due to a tenant's status as a survivor are barred under VAWA, which also requires landlords to maintain survivor-tenant confidentiality. Tenants who are survivors of domestic violence cannot be denied assistance, tenancy or occupancy rights based solely on criminal activity related to an act of domestic violence committed against them. Since the provisions offered by VAWA are considered a Fair Housing issue, it is imperative to make sure you are following all of HUD's guidelines on this matter. Failure to do so could bring a lawsuit and penalties that could amount to thousands of dollars.

In this session expert Debbie Hixon will discuss the provisions and guidelines of HUD related to VAWA. She will share several real examples of domestic abuse and the outcome of these. You will also receive a copy of February 9, 2011 memorandum issued to the office of Fair Housing Equal Opportunity.
