Federal Rules Mean Service Animals Can’t Be Barred from Housing

Your planned community may choose to restrict pets, but federal law requires you to reasonably accommodate disability-related animals. Don’t run afoul of the Fair Housing Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act. Be sure your animal policy properly addresses service animals.

Join fair housing expert Jo Becker to learn the definition of “disability,” common misperceptions about what federal laws do/don’t allow, frequent policy pitfalls, compliant verification procedures—and what the law really means by the “reasonable” in “reasonable accommodations.” Plus, find out how to tell a “pet” from a “service animal.”

You’ll walk away from this instructive session with a better understanding of the Fair Housing Act’s trio of disability protections and the fundamental principles of disability-related accommodation. You’ll know what residents have the right to ask, as well as your obligations and rights in response—including legal reasons for a denial.

Don’t get caught off guard by a resident’s animal-related request: Know what you can say, what rules you can set, what fees you can charge, and what enforcement actions you can take.
