Tenant Relations: 3 Easy Steps to Turn Your Buildings into Smoke-Free Living Zones

So you′ve been thinking about setting up smoke-free zones in your rental properties but you′re not sure how to go about it? It′s much easier than you think—and your tenants and the law are on your side.

California often leads the way in national trends, and this has certainly been true on the smoke-free living issue, although many other states and communities have now caught up. Kimberly Weich Reusche, Project Director at the American Lung Association of California, shared with Eli the results of a Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing study that surveyed 600 apartment renters and 300 apartment owners and managers. The result: both tenants and owners/managers of apartment units are eager to set aside smoke-free apartment units. 

More than 85 percent of apartment renters and owners/managers say that second-hand smoke is harmful. Fully 69 percent of apartment renters and 57 percent of apartment owners/managers would favor a law requiring all apartment buildings in their city to offer non-smoking sections.
